Remembering Matt: A Friend, A Helper, and a Beacon of Hope

It’s been a year since we lost our dear friend and trusted volunteer, Matt — and not a day goes by that his spirit isn’t felt here at 12 Step Online. His presence, his service, and his love for this fellowship left an imprint on our hearts and on this community that will never fade.

Matt was the kind of person the Big Book talks about — someone who had a genuine desire to be of maximum service to God and the people about him. He lived that principle every single day. Whether he was helping someone log into a meeting, listening to a newcomer share their story, or just checking in to make sure someone felt seen and heard, Matt was practicing the Twelfth Step in everything he did.

He didn’t just talk about recovery — he lived it. He showed up. He gave freely of his time, his heart, and his experience. When people were struggling, Matt was there to remind them that no one in this program ever has to walk alone again. He was quick to listen, slow to judge, and always ready with a kind word or a bit of hard-earned wisdom.

For me personally, Matt wasn’t just a volunteer — he was a brother in recovery and a close friend. We talked daily, about life, about the site, and about the spiritual journey we’re all on. He had a gift for reminding me what this program is really about: connection, humility, and service. He helped keep me grounded in gratitude, especially on the tough days.

Over the past year, so many people have reached out to share what Matt meant to them. They talk about how he made them laugh during meetings, how he helped them get their audio working when they were desperate to hear a message, how he offered strength when theirs was running out. That’s what recovery looks like in action — one alcoholic helping another, heart to heart.

Though Matt has gone on to that “Big Meeting in the Sky,” his spirit of service lives on here at 12 Step Online. Every meeting that runs smoothly, every newcomer who finds a warm welcome, every person who feels less alone because of this fellowship — that’s Matt’s legacy.

Matt showed us what it means to practice these principles in all our affairs. He reminded us that giving back is how we stay sober, how we stay connected, and how we keep the miracle alive. The best way we can honor him is by following his example: by showing up, reaching out, and continuing to carry the message, one day at a time.

Matt, thank you for your service, your friendship, and your unwavering love for this program and the people in it. You will always be part of this fellowship, and your light will continue to guide us forward.

Rest easy, brother. Until we meet again — we’ll keep coming back.
