I’m Beth and I’m an alcoholic. Nicki I’m so glad you have a sponsor. I have also just started and I don’t have a sponsor yet because we have very few in-person meetings in my town, but I’ll get to go to one tomorrow. I doubt if your sponsor will give up on you. Just talk to her. Tell her that you’re scared she’ll give up on you. Ask for h…[Read more]

Just getting started. Before I went to detox last week I was terrified. I drank in the car all the way to the detox center. (My husband drove.) Now I can say I am honestly excited about this journey. I went to my intake at the local therapy center and have started my AA meetings. I feel hope again.

Jamie, I am Beth. I am an alcoholic. I had been drinking socially for about 20 years, but a few of life's tragedies threw me into a tailspin and I started drinking more and more, until I was drinking all day long and didn't know how to stop. I tried to "taper off," but that didn't work. I was scared to go cold turkey because I would get the…[Read more]

Beth replied to the topic Looking for help, for the first time in the forum
Alcohol Recovery Group 8 years, 7 months agoMelinda, I am Beth and I am an alcoholic. If you have insurance, I suggest detox. If you have a job, take your vacation to do it. It is so worth it for the help. If you don’t have insurance, remember thousands of people have achieved sobriety just through AA meetings and sponsorships. I just got out of detox, went to my first outpatient inta…[Read more]

Alcohol Recovery Group 8 years, 7 months agoI’m Beth and I’m an alcoholic. All the power that there is comes from the Higher Power. It’s a continual process of submitting to that Higher Power, every day, every hour, even every minute sometimes. We have NO power of our own. That’s why trying to do it ourselves doesn’t work. When you really want power to do something, the answer is to s…[Read more]

B-rad replied to the topic Should I stop drinking? in the forum
Alcohol Recovery Group 8 years, 10 months agoI am a little late to this thread, but so happy you made it here. I would encourage you to read the chapter in our basic text (The book of Alcoholics Anonymous – or what we AA’s refer to as “The Big Book”) title “More About Alcoholism“. It might help you draw some conclusions and learn some facts about yourself. Only YOU can diagnose yourself as…[Read more]

Alcohol Recovery Group 8 years, 10 months agoI’m really happy you’re here. Being an active alcoholic is not easy. If you’re anything like I was, you’re either:
Busy drinking
Busy planning when you’ll drink next
Busy trying to get money to drink
Busy making excuses about why your drinking is OK
Busy being hung over
Etc…It’s a full time job. But, you’ve taken the first plunge…[Read more]

Alcohol Recovery Group 9 years, 1 month agoOur lives are full of daily decisions – some critical, some not so critical. Some have lasting impacts. Some don’t. Each are treated differently depending on the situation and various other factors while other decisions are instinctual. For example, I discovered that I always put my left leg into my pants first when I get dressed. This is not a…[Read more]

Alcohol Recovery Group 9 years, 3 months agoThis is such a difficult concept for some to take, myself included. I was born and raised as a Sunday and Holiday’s Catholic as a child and the Catholic faith left a bad taste in my mouth. I thought they were all hypocrites. And I was right. None of us are perfect – people in church included. I had no idea that there was a difference between…[Read more]
